The letter is undated; postmarked March 9, 1945. It is a rare letter that doesn’t begin, “I am well, happy and safe…”
I am still in the hospital. Things are pretty dull around here right now, so there isn’t much to write about but the usual phenomena, the weather. The weather is still fine around here, which makes it a phenomena.
You can send me a package if you want to. If you don’t think they will spoil, send me some of those nickel pies. Besides that, send me some razor blades, you know what kind, and some candy bars, preferably Milky Ways.
That’s about all, folks,
Love & kisses,
Editor’s note: I cannot quite make out what Babe wrote about pies. I am pretty sure he wrote “nickel pies,” but the reader might check me on that and comment below if you see the actual letter and think differently. I can’t find anything on the web about “nickel pies” except a Nickel City Bakery in upstate New York.
